What is Tang Soo Do?

Tang Soo Do is a traditional Korean martial art that combines an array of hand techniques with dynamic kicking. Students are taught mental focus, toughness and discipline in addition to the physical training that strengthens their bodies.

The class is open to ages 5 and up and we encourage families to participate together. Local and regional tournaments for competition in open/traditional formats and full-contact fighting are available for those who wish to compete.

Tang Soo Do "empty hand, bear no-weapon, desire peace."

Classes are structured around a head instructor who takes students through a session  which combines the following elements:

  • Warm-ups/Cool-downs: includes calisthenics, flexibility and isometric strength training

  • Techniques: dedicated break-down to the proper movements needed to execute good stances, blocking, punching and kicking.

  • Forms: rank-by-rank group training to practice the traditional forms required for each belt-level

  • Self-Defense: scenario-based counters to common attacks and grabs

  • Sparring: traditional, point and full-contact style fighting versus one and multiple opponents

  • Weapons: traditional weapons (bo-staff, nunchuks, sais, kamas)

  • Chanbara: sword fighting with competition-style foam swords and protective head-gear

  • Breaking:  focus-training on proper technique to break wood and bricks

Benefits of Tang Soo Do

The practice of traditional martial arts offers many benefits.  On the physical side, expect to improve your balance, circulation, flexibility, coordination, muscle-tone and overall strength. Tang Soo Do also helps with many mental aspects such as improved concentration, focus, and self-discipline.

Tang Soo Do also offers quite a bit of mental exercise as well. Every class, we work on techniques that require memorization and muscle memory. Each technique has its own position that holds true to the ancient teaching that have been passed down for generations. Master Sean takes pride in helping each one of his students learn these techniques by repetition and practical exercise

Self Defense

Master Sean has an extensive background in teaching practical self defense techniques within his Tang Soo Do classes. Each lesson teaches his students how to use their own body mechanics to leverage an advantage over an opponent. Students learn how to use every part of their body to disable, and disarm opponents. Students will learn how safely escape both from the ground, and on their feet. Each technique is meant to be simple and effective in a way that prioritizes safety. Many of these lessons have direct connections to Tang Soo Do as a Martial Art.
